Where do you get the inspiration in your horses' names? What effects in choosing or making up them? Is using real life horses names good or not? What is the best name you have given to a horse? And the worst? Etc. General conversation about names, please I don't personally like using real life names, especially if the horse is famous in RL. I always make up the names by my mind, sometimes using dictionaries. Some words just sound beautiful, and some word combinations just match nicely. The language of the name depends on the country where the breed of the horse origins.

Personally, I try to stay away from real life names for my horses, unless it's in their pedigree. I sometimes combine the parents names when I name them, depending on which breed of course. Sometimes I go with cities, sometimes with songs, movies etc. Anything really can help me.

I almost always take part of the pedigree to make the name. I never use real names, but instead try get ideas from the pedigree, then use them to make a new name with a new idea. Just for example I once owned a sim horse named Red Corvette (Red Brick Road x Yvette). Then I named all his offspring after other sports cars, while using their dam's names in them as well. If nothing in the pedigree works, I'll use words I think are nice, or theme them after movies/books/history etc.

I use the first letter in one of the parents name, to name my horses. The first letter in the fathers name if the foal is a stallion, and the first letter in the mothers name if the foal is a mare. In that way I can follow my lines backwards and see wich horse that horse comes from. One of my favourite names is Amarion, a stallion that I named, and then one day googled it, and realized that it's a real name, that was funny! A few other favourites is Yaxon and Paraminn. I can't think of a name that I dislike

I never use the names of real horses on my sim game horses. I usually name them after some movie, book, game, song or fictional character or I´ll just combine the names of the parents.
Here is a few examples:
RW She´s the Man, RW Prince of Persia, RW Don Quijote, RW Casino Royale, RW Quantum of Solace, RW Viva La Gloria, RW Legend of Zelda, etc.

I take names of song I like. Real horses names are used only if there can be no confusion. E.g.: Coupe the cour is a holstain stallion, grey. My horse will have every color but it won't be a grey stallion.

Usually I use books or songs. My stable A sim game stable Inverness, is named by the Diana Gabaldon's books. There is also one horse (Beauchamp) which name is from Gabaldon's books. My other horses that I have named myself are Crossfire, Afterlife and White Granite, they're all from songs. I think that Unitanssija has the most beautiful name of my horses. It means Dreamdancer.

I never use names of real horses as far as I know, that the name is from a real horse. Sometimes I just combine two words which don't have real meanings but sound well together, other times I search for a word with a special meaning. Names from cities or places in books sometimes help me to find a suitable name, too. It is almost always different, but most of the time I asociate with a special word / name directly one of my horses or I hear a word and think "Oh, that is a great name for the foal of stallion xy and mare xx." The names always have to match with the country of origin and the language spoken there, where the breed come from, so there are many different names. One of my favourite names is Novalis Castiel, who was inspired by a Supernatural-character (the angel - Castiel) or his 'sister' Novalès. I like names which sound great but don't have a real meaning, for example Novalis Castiel or Cyrus Farce, too.

I try to avoid real life horse names as much as I can! They cause only trouble, thinking of all the search engines and people who cannot tell the difference between virtual and real-life horses. Our own foals get nearly always the breeding name Ion in their names (Aydan Ion, Iris Dun Ion etc), Akhal Tekes get Gin (Gin Gavarap, Gin Keramika etc). The horses we have just made up (not having parents in SIM world) usually get GA in their names (Ace Queen GA, Jazyrdy GA). These are our ways to get as unique names as possible. Kladruber and Arabian foals have a bit different naming method. Kladrubers get names in the same manner as in real life. Arabian foals have 2 or 3 part names, the first part comes from the dam line and the second part (and third, if there's any) is the "own" name of the foal. They may be like Amab Mahfouza (dam line Amab Sharion) or Piekna Cape Verde (dam ling Piekna Kobieta). We usually choose the names somehow according the breed. Knabstruppers have Danish or at least Scandinavic-sounding names, not English. Russian breeds have Russian-related names, Rocky Mountains English names and so on. I cannot give the best name(s) because we do have made up thousands of names and it's totally impossible to choose the best Usually I like the names which are somehow related to the sire's or dam's name, in best cases to both's. Also the wordplays are nice (Heyday Bay GA, Postmanringstwice GA etc). And it doesn't any harm if the name has some special meaning for me (Need For Speed GA, Tamburello GA, Shelby Ion)

if there is a special regulation in real, i try to use it also in sim game. that for example hannoveraner are always named after the father, but trakehner are always named after the mother. that camargue horse have more french-sounding names and fjordhorses something nordish. i also try not to use names of fames real horses and i avoid names like "black dream", "dancer", "max" or stuff. because there are thousands of horses named like this, if i find some "black dream" i can never be sure it´s the black dream i named and selled. if i see a "shiho gatame" i can be almost sure it´s my foal

When it comes to names, I like to be creative I chose names from books or stories I know, names from songs, names of flowers or anything else natural or I use the pedigree to make up a name. It depends on the breed though. Most german warmbloods have a strict rule how to name a foal (Hanoverians are named by their father´s first letter, Trakehner are named by their mothers first letter and so on). I totally try to avoid real horses names (you never can be sure that there isnt a horse named like mine, but I avoid the names of horses I know). Id for example never pretend to own a horse with the name of a well known horse, like Donnerhall, Don Schufro, Totilas, Caprimond or one of the other typical warmbloods we all know. I also try to stay away from pretending I own a foal of a very well known real life mare. And last but not least : I avoid names with "black", "dream", "magic", "star", "storm" and so on to make sure that the names are individual.

I like "soundfull" and glamorous names. The language of the name depends on the breed. For Trakehners eg I like german names. If a horses bloodline has a certain system I continue with that (eg Nordlicht out of Nordstern ...). What I don't like is when horses, especialy stallions, have names of famous horses (eg Totilas). It doesn't matter if the horse is not the same breed or colour, it's a general thing.

Nessa, is that first-letter-naming with those warmbloods used in real life breeding? Is the rule also for other wb breeds, e.g. mecklenburg, württemberg etc?
